Stitch count, size and hoop fit: reading a design before you stitch
Before a design is worth hooping, four numbers tell you almost everything: how big it is, how many stitches, how many colour stops, and how much thread it will eat.
Size, in millimetres, not in inches on a listing
A design stores its own extents, so its real size is a fact you can read rather than a claim you have to trust. Compare it against the hoop you own:

A design can be rotated to fit — 96 × 170 mm goes into a 130 × 180 hoop either way round — so the check is whether both dimensions fit in some orientation, not whether width beats width.
Stitch count, and what it really predicts
Stitch count tells you two things: roughly how long the run takes, and how dense the design is relative to its size.
- A machine at around 600 stitches a minute does 10,000 stitches in roughly 17 minutes of actual sewing, before thread changes.
- The same 10,000 stitches in a 40 mm design is dense enough to stiffen the fabric; in a 180 mm design it is light.
Density is where puckering comes from. If a small design has a very high stitch count, plan the stabilizer accordingly.
Colour stops are a shopping list
Each colour stop is the machine pausing for you to rethread. Twelve stops means twelve interruptions and up to twelve spools. Counting them before you start is the difference between an evening's stitching and discovering at stop nine that you do not own the colour.
Trims and jumps
A jump is the needle travelling without stitching, leaving a loose thread behind; a trim is the machine cutting it. A design with many long jumps and few trims means a lot of snipping afterwards. Seeing the jumps drawn before you hoop is the cheapest way to know what you are in for.
Thread estimates are estimates
Treat the number as a floor
A thread estimate is the summed length of the stitch path plus an allowance for the bobbin. Real use varies with tension, fabric and stabilizer, so read it as "at least this much" rather than a promise. It is most useful as a comparison — this design needs twice what that one does — not as a purchase quantity.
Density, the number nobody prints
No design file states its density directly, but stitch count divided by area gets you close enough to make decisions. Two designs with 15,000 stitches are completely different propositions if one is 50 mm across and the other 180 mm.
A very dense small design needs a firmer stabilizer, a slower speed and a sharper needle, and it will stiffen the fabric no matter what you do. That is not a fault in the design — some things are meant to be solid — but it should be a choice rather than a surprise.
Reading the colour stops as a plan
Colour stops in order are effectively the running order of your evening. Two useful things fall out of reading them before you start:
- Where the natural break is. If stop 7 of 12 is the last of the big fills, that is where you can safely stop for the night.
- Which colours repeat. A design that returns to the same thread at stops 3 and 9 means one rethread you can plan around rather than discover.
Jumps, trims and what you will be doing afterwards
A jump leaves a loose thread between two areas; a trim is the machine cutting it. A design with many jumps and few trims is one you will be snipping for a while after it comes out of the hoop. Machines that trim automatically make this moot, but plenty do not, and the design file tells you which situation you are in.
Long jumps are also where a design goes wrong visually: a jump dragged across an open area can show through a light fabric. Seeing the jumps drawn, before hooping, is the cheapest possible check.
Putting it together
Four numbers, one decision. If the size fits your hoop, the stitch count is sane for the area, the colour stops are ones you can supply, and the jumps are not alarming, the design is worth starting. If any one of those fails, you have saved yourself an evening.
