How to open a VP3 embroidery file on your phone
A .vp3 file is a machine-embroidery design rather than a picture — the format Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines read. To open a VP3 embroidery file on a phone you need something that replays the stitches, and then four numbers tell you whether the design is worth hooping.
What a VP3 file is, and who reads it
A VP3 holds needle instructions: lay a stitch here, trim the thread, stop for a colour change, end. Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines read it, and the two brands share the format. Your gallery app ignores the file because there is no picture in it to show — a design only becomes an image when software replays the stitch list and draws the result.
VP3 arrived as the replacement for the older VIP and PCS designs those brands used before it; the file-format references agree on that as of September 2026. It has one practical consequence worth knowing before you go looking for an app: a .vip, .pcs, .hus or .shv file is not a VP3, and Hoopside does not read those four. What it reads is VP3, PES, PEC, DST, JEF, EXP and XXX.
Is your VP3 a design or a video?
Worth ten seconds, because the search results mix the two. On2 also made a video codec called VP3; it was handed to the Xiph.Org Foundation and became Theora, and the codec's specification still sits in Theora's own source repository. That is why a generic "what is a .vp3 file" page answers with media players and codec downloads, which is no use at all to a stitcher.
Where the file came from settles it. A design shop, an Etsy download, a Facebook group or a machine's USB stick means an embroidery design, and everything below applies. A video archive from around the turn of the century means the codec, and nothing below does.
Opening a VP3 embroidery file on Android
- Extract it first if it arrived as a zip. The design is a file inside the archive, and a phone will happily hand you the archive instead.
- Install a viewer that reads VP3. Hoopside does, and viewing is free — no ads, no account, and nothing leaves the phone.
- Open the file from the app, or tap the design in Downloads, Drive or a messaging app and choose Open with.
What you should get is the design drawn the way it will stitch, not a thumbnail: its real size in millimetres, the stitch count, and every colour stop numbered in the order the machine will ask for it. Hoopside also names the format it actually found in the file and, beside it, the smallest standard hoop the design fits — 100 × 100, 130 × 180 or 200 × 200 mm — or says plainly that it fits none of them. The jumps are drawn too, apart from the thread, so a long one is something you see before hooping rather than after.
A mangled file name does not stop it. Every VP3 begins with the five characters %vsm%, and Hoopside reads a file's leading bytes before it looks at the name. A design that arrived through a messaging app as document-1.bin, with the extension stripped, is still recognisably a VP3 — and that is the commonest reason a design "will not open" anywhere else on the phone.
What a VP3 carries that a DST does not
Colour. A VP3 stores a thread entry for each colour block, and that entry can hold a description, a brand and a catalogue string as well as the colour itself. A DST has nowhere to put any of it, which is why the same design bought "in all formats" shows real colours as a VP3 and invented ones as a DST.

A name in the file is still only a name
Hoopside shows the thread name and catalogue string the VP3 carried, and shows nothing where the file carried nothing. Read what is there as the shade the designer happened to use, to hold your own spools against, rather than as a code to order from: it was written by whatever software exported the design, and the spool in your drawer is the only authority on what you actually have.
Converting a VP3 for a different machine
If the design is a VP3 and your machine is a Brother or a Janome, you need a real conversion rather than a renamed file. The reason is in the encodings: a single VP3 command may move the needle 255 units — 25.5 mm — while a DST command is capped at 121 and an XXX at 124. A stitch that is perfectly legal in the VP3 therefore cannot be written as one DST command, and has to be split into a run of shorter ones along the same path. Conversion does not resize a design, does not improve a badly made one, and cannot promise that a particular machine will take the result. What you choose is the format; what your model accepts is what its manual says. In Hoopside, viewing every design is free and converting is a one-time unlock.
Why a VP3 saved from a VP3 gains a trim
One curiosity, if you ever compare a saved file against the original. VP3 marks the end of a design with the same two bytes it uses for a trim, so a VP3 written back out from a VP3 reads back with one extra trim in it. Hoopside's format code keeps that behaviour rather than "fixing" it, because it matches the reference library the encodings are ported from — and it is one command at the very end of the file, which changes nothing on fabric.
What to check before you stitch
- Size against your hoop, in millimetres, and in either orientation — a design can be rotated to fit.
- Colour stops, counted before you start, so you know how many rethreads are coming and which spools you need.
- Stitch count, for how long the run takes and how dense the design is for its size.
- Jumps, so the snipping afterwards is not a surprise.

When the machine still refuses it
A VP3 that opens perfectly on the phone can still be turned down at the machine, and the cause is usually mundane: the design sitting in a folder the model never looks at, a stick the machine wants formatted differently, a design larger than the hoop, or a stitch count beyond what an older model accepts. Those are worth ruling out before you conclude the file is bad — six reasons a machine rejects a design takes them in the order that wastes least time.
The one thing you can settle from the sofa is whether the file itself is sound. If it opens, measures what the seller claimed, and has the colour stops you expected, the design is fine and the problem is somewhere between the USB stick and the manual.
